President of the Republic Nikos Christodoulides said Cyprus will apply to join NATO when circumstances allow, describing relations with the United States as stronger than ever despite the country not being a member of the alliance.

Speaking to SKAI television, Christodoulides said international reporting on developments in Cyprus contains “a degree of exaggeration”, noting that “in times of war the first casualty is the truth”.

Drone incidents near the British Bases

The President stated that the incidents recorded in Cyprus concern exclusively the British Bases and mainly originate from Lebanon.

“I am in continuous contact with the President of Lebanon,” he said, adding that “so far there have only been two drone attacks”.

Defence capabilities and European support

Referring to Cyprus’ defence capabilities, Christodoulides said the country has significantly upgraded its own systems while also benefiting from the protection provided by the British Bases and defence agreements with European states.

“It is the first time I see such a response. In the EU there is Article 42.7, the equivalent of Article 5 in NATO. The target at the moment is the British Bases,” he said, adding that he has spoken with several European counterparts.

He thanked Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis for Greece’s decision to deploy F-16 fighter jets and frigates, describing it as one of the most significant developments in the history of the Republic of Cyprus.

“We asked for reinforcement in specific areas and there was an immediate response. This was followed by France’s response to our request and subsequently by Italy and Spain,” he said.

British Bases and sovereignty issue

Christodoulides also referred to reactions from Turkey, noting that these were isolated responses from individuals rather than from the Turkish government.

He also expressed dissatisfaction with the stance of the UK Defence Secretary.

“The British Bases are not being used for the war that is under way,” he said, adding: “We are interested in what happens at the British Bases, even though we have a disagreement regarding sovereignty.”

Relations with the United States

Commenting on his relationship with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, the President said that bilateral relations are at their strongest level.

“Our relations are the best they have ever been and we are not even a member of NATO,” he said.

Christodoulides added that Cyprus intends to submit an application to join NATO once the circumstances allow.
