The President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, held a telephone conversation this morning with the elected Prime Minister of Hungary, Péter Magyar.

According to a written statement by Government Spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis, President Christodoulides congratulated Mr Magyar on his electoral success and election to the premiership of Hungary, expressing both the readiness of the Republic of Cyprus and his personal commitment to close and productive cooperation at bilateral and European level. In this context, the President invited Mr Magyar to visit Cyprus, while Mr Magyar also invited President Christodoulides to pay an official visit to Hungary within the year.

During the conversation, President Christodoulides briefed the Hungarian Prime Minister‑elect on the work and outcomes of the Informal European Council organised in Cyprus on 23 and 24 April. Specifically, President Christodoulides referred to the important deliverables on key issues concerning the European Union and the wider region, at a time when Europe is called upon to take decisions with an immediate impact on competitiveness, security, energy resilience and its role as a force for stability in its neighbourhood. Particular reference was made to the Multiannual Financial Framework, energy prices, the mutual assistance clause of Article 42.7 of the Treaty on European Union, as well as the presence of and substantive exchange of views with leaders from the wider region.

At the same time, views were exchanged on issues on the European agenda that are of direct relevance to Hungary, taking into account Cyprus’s role as holder of the Presidency of the Council of the European Union during the current six‑month term.

The two leaders agreed to remain in close contact, with the aim of further advancing shared European priorities and addressing common challenges facing the European Union.
