Police say Operation Guardian has stepped up patrols and checks in two of the Limassol area’s busiest coastal spots.

Twelve people have been arrested over the past four weeks during intensified police operations at Lady’s Mile and Kourion beaches, the Sovereign Base Areas Police said.

Among the cases under investigation is an arrest made last weekend involving suspected drug possession and offensive weapons.

According to the SBA Police, the suspect is a 34-year-old Bulgarian national who said he was homeless. He was allegedly found driving under the influence of drugs. A subsequent search of his vehicle uncovered a small quantity of drugs, believed by police to be for personal use, as well as several illegal sharp kitchen knives, a sickle and a wooden bat.

The 34-year-old was arrested at the scene and remains in custody pending the hearing of his case on July 6.

As part of the same operations, 20 drivers were reported for less serious traffic offences, while 60 people received written warnings for breaches relating to road traffic and the use of speedboats. Two people were also referred to the Akrotiri SBA Administration after allegedly operating without the required professional licence.

Lady’s Mile and Kourion beaches are estimated to attract more than 7,000 visitors a day at weekends, increasing the need for patrols and checks, particularly during the summer season.

Inspector Tony Demetriou said public safety and strengthening the sense of security among visitors remained at the centre of police efforts.

“Operation Guardian has started with very positive results and is already showing its impact. Our proactive approach has helped keep the beaches safe, while also strengthening the sense of security for the thousands of visitors, as shown by the results achieved so far,” he said.

The SBA Police Marine Unit also maintains a strong presence in the area and has so far carried out checks on 113 boats and jet skis.
