UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy María Ángela Holguín has said efforts by the United Nations on the Cyprus issue will continue, following an hour-long meeting with President Nikos Christodoulides at UN headquarters.
Both Holguín and Christodoulides described the meeting as very good and highly constructive, with the UN envoy expressing optimism about the outcome of ongoing efforts.
UN efforts to continue
In a brief statement following the meeting, Holguín said she remained optimistic about prospects surrounding the Cyprus issue and confirmed that the United Nations would continue its efforts.
The meeting formed part of Christodoulides’ diplomatic contacts in New York during the high-level week of the UN General Assembly.
Christodoulides briefs Holguín on Erhürman talks
According to information reported by CyBC, Christodoulides briefed Holguín on the outcome of the meetings he has held in recent months with Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman.
The president also presented Holguín with the main elements of new ideas he had put forward during his latest meeting with Erhürman as part of efforts to advance dialogue.
Guterres meeting next
Christodoulides is scheduled to meet UN Secretary-General António Guterres on Thursday afternoon.
The meeting is expected to provide another opportunity to discuss the prospects for further movement on the Cyprus issue and the next steps in the UN-led process.
