Upgrade works are under way at the Acropolis Park playground, with completion expected in October as part of a wider effort to improve one of Strovolos’ best-known and busiest public spaces.
The project goes beyond replacing ageing playground equipment and includes a broader redesign with modern play facilities, upgraded infrastructure, improved safety and greater accessibility. The municipality is also replacing the surface of the park’s basketball court as part of efforts to encourage sport, particularly among children and young people.
New accessible playground
Particular emphasis is being placed on facilities for children with disabilities, with the new design including equipment that can be used by children with different mobility needs.
The aim is to make the playground more inclusive and provide opportunities for as many children as possible to use and enjoy the space.
The playground upgrade forms the main part of the works currently taking place at Acropolis Park, where high visitor numbers over the years have increased the need to modernise some facilities.
Once completed, the playground will feature new equipment and improved infrastructure, with a focus on making the space safer and more practical for families.
The original schedule envisaged earlier completion, but the latest timetable provides for the upgraded playground to be delivered during October.
One of Strovolos’ main green spaces
Acropolis Park is one of the most important green spaces in Strovolos and among the capital’s relatively few large open areas where people can walk, exercise and spend time away from heavy urban traffic.
Its walking paths, vegetation, lake, fountains and distinctive elevated bridge have made it a familiar feature of Nicosia’s urban landscape, attracting families, walkers and people exercising every day.
The park is also home to the Acropolis Caves, linked to an old underground quarry and used for cultural and exhibition activities.
Other facilities include an amphitheatre, sports areas and spaces used for various events.
The combination of greenery, sport, culture and recreation has made the park a multifunctional public space serving not only nearby residents but visitors from across greater Nicosia.
Facilities for the whole family
Acropolis Park also includes a designated fenced dog area near the Pentelis Street car park.
The facility provides basic infrastructure for dogs to exercise and socialise, as well as seating for their owners.
Together with the sports facilities, walking routes, cultural spaces and revamped playground, the dog park forms part of a broader range of amenities designed for different age groups and activities.
Mayor says upgrade is ‘only the beginning’
Strovolos Mayor Stavros Stavrinides told Politis the playground project forms part of a broader effort to continuously improve Acropolis Park.
He described the park as one of the municipality’s most important green spaces, used by thousands of people every day.
According to Stavrinides, the playground upgrade places particular emphasis on safety, accessibility and equal opportunities for all children to use the facilities, including children with disabilities.
He said the municipality wants its interventions to reflect the modern needs of families while reinforcing the park’s public and open character.
The mayor stressed that Acropolis Park’s importance extends well beyond its playground, describing it as a major space for greenery, sport, walking and recreation serving both Strovolos and wider Nicosia.
The current works are not expected to be the final intervention. Stavrinides said the municipality intends to gradually continue upgrading the park’s infrastructure to ensure it remains safe, functional and attractive to people of all ages.
