Miltos Tentoglou delivered another high-calibre performance on Friday, flying to 8.61 metres at the Diamond League meeting in Monaco, confirming his status as the benchmark in the long jump and sending a resounding message ahead of the season's major competitions.
Second-best jump of his career
The Olympic long jump champion recorded his winning leap with a headwind of 0.9 m/s, a mark that stands as the second-best of his career and placed him at the top of the world rankings for this season.
A series of strong attempts
Tentoglou opened ideally, landing his first jump at 8.48m (-0.3), before reaching 8.52m (-0.9) on his second attempt, despite taking off nine centimetres before the board. That effort was his best in a final since the European Championships in Rome in 2024.
The Greek champion recorded 8.34m (-0.1) on his third attempt, while his fourth jump was a foul as he opted to take greater risks. He returned to top form on his fifth attempt with 8.49m (+0.2), saving his finest effort for last.
The winning leap
On his sixth and final jump, Tentoglou had an excellent run-up, took off just one centimetre before the board and landed at 8.61m in windless conditions.
High-quality field
The competition was contested at an exceptionally high level, with Jamaica's Wayne Pinnock taking second place with 8.39m, Cuba's Jorge Odelín following with 8.38m, Bulgaria's Bozhidar Saraboyukov recording 8.36m and Switzerland's Simon Ehammer completing his outing with 8.32m.
