Problems in the operation of the warning system were recorded during Wednesday's activation of the sirens, on the anniversary of the coup, as the prescribed audio signal was not heard in areas of Paphos and the Nicosia district.
The admission
The Civil Defence Press Spokesperson, Panayiotis Liasides, said on the programme "Alpha Enimerosi" that all the necessary preparations had been made, on the basis of the prescribed procedures. He admitted, however, that problems arose, which are to be investigated.
Among the complaints recorded was a report from Dali, with the area's mayor pointing out that the sirens did not sound. Corresponding complaints were made from areas of Paphos.
"All cases will be examined. The matter is being assessed and a study is under way for the replacement of the system. We are monitoring the issue and measures will be taken," Mr Liasides said. He noted that it is still early to form a complete picture of the number of sirens that did not operate, as well as the extent of the areas affected.
157 sirens across Cyprus
According to Mr Liasides, approximately 157 sirens are currently installed across Cyprus. Coverage is concentrated mainly in the urban centres, while sirens have also been placed in certain communities. He admitted, at the same time, that there are geographical areas which are not adequately covered by the existing system.
As he explained, a study is in progress for the upgrading and replacement of the system, with the aim of improving coverage in areas where no sirens exist today.
