How to Keep Beach Sand Out of Your Car

With a few simple tricks and everyday items, you can get rid of stubborn beach sand before heading home.

Sand sticking to wet feet is one of the most annoying parts of a day at the beach. It ends up in flip-flops, on car seats and, eventually, throughout the house.

Fortunately, there are a few simple ways to get rid of it before leaving the shore.

Use baby powder

One of the most effective beach hacks is baby powder or talcum powder.

Once your feet have dried slightly, sprinkle a small amount onto sandy areas and gently rub it over your skin. The powder absorbs moisture, making it much easier for sand to fall away.

Let your feet dry first

If you do not have powder with you, allow your feet to dry completely in the sun before brushing them off with a dry towel or a soft brush.

Sand clings much more easily to damp skin, so a few minutes of patience can make a big difference.

Keep water and a towel in the car

A large bottle of water can be invaluable for a final rinse before getting into the car.

After rinsing, however, make sure to dry your feet thoroughly with a clean towel. Otherwise, the sand will simply stick back onto wet skin.

Create a clean area beside the car

A small plastic mat or shallow basin placed next to the car allows you to clean your feet without stepping back onto the sand.

Mesh beach bags can also help by allowing sand to fall through instead of collecting among towels, swimwear and toys.

A few essentials go a long way

With just three items:

  • Baby powder
  • A dry towel
  • A bottle of water

you can keep the sand where it belongs: on the beach.
