Greek Cypriot negotiator Menelaos Menelaou and Turkish Cypriot negotiator Mehmet Dana will meet on Monday afternoon, ahead of a meeting between the two community leaders later in the week. President of the Republic Nikos Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman will hold their last meeting on Thursday, set for 11:00 a.m. local time, before the UN General Assembly (UNGA) convenes in New York.
Leaders' meeting
The Thursday session falls within the framework of the two leaders' regular contacts and the continuation of what has been described as the substantive discussion phase of the Cyprus talks.
Following their previous meeting on September 9, the two leaders continued discussions on three core issues: methodology, substance, and confidence-building measures. President Christodoulides said afterwards that progress and common understanding had been reached on some issues, while differences remain on others.
Possible New York meeting
President Christodoulides told the press after the September 9 meeting that a joint meeting between him and the Turkish Cypriot leader could take place in New York, potentially involving UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres or his personal envoy. As of now, CNA has learned there is no update on whether any such meeting will be arranged.
Guterres–Holguín contact pending
There has also been no update regarding a planned phone conversation between Guterres and his Personal Envoy on Cyprus, Maria Angela Holguín. Holguín postponed a planned visit to the island in recent days, as well as a trip to New York, for health reasons.
