The Municipalities of South Nicosia-Idalion and Latsia-Geri are demanding the immediate reversal of the decision to site the new Central Prisons in the Agios Sozomenos area.
Municipalities acknowledge need, question process
In a joint statement, the two municipalities said they recognise the need for modern, suitable infrastructure for the country's correctional institution. However, they stressed that a project of this scale, designed to hold more than 1,000 detainees and employ hundreds of staff, must be sited on the basis of a comprehensive, scientifically documented study taking into account all relevant parameters, including existing land use, environmental and social impacts, infrastructure, and the needs of the wider area.
Area already under pressure, municipalities say
The two municipalities noted that the Agios Sozomenos area is already burdened by a number of existing activities and infrastructure, including biological treatment plants, livestock waste processing facilities, quarries, pig farms and other livestock premises. An overhead 132kV Electricity Authority of Cyprus power line also runs through the area.
They further pointed out that the site in question includes provision for a designated livestock farming zone, under planning for the restructuring of Cyprus's livestock sector, a factor they said cannot be overlooked and must be taken into account when assessing the area's suitability.
Call for consultation before any final decision
The two municipalities, which together represent approximately 60,000 residents, said local authorities cannot remain excluded from a process concerning a project with such significant, long-term implications for the wider area.
They are calling for the immediate suspension of any further discussion, announcement or action to advance the project at this specific site, until substantive consultation takes place with local authorities and affected communities. They are also requesting that all available alternative siting options be examined on the basis of objective, documented criteria.
The Municipalities of South Nicosia-Idalion and Latsia-Geri said they will continue to closely monitor developments and responsibly represent their residents' interests, calling on the state to reconsider the choice of this particular site before any final decision is taken.
