Investigators are gathering final evidence and witness statements following the 43-year-old suspect’s confession and the discovery of the victim’s body in Moniatis.

The murder of 61-year-old Olga Vasilieva is considered solved, with Limassol CID investigators now focusing on clarifying outstanding details and completing the case file.

Following the 43-year-old suspect’s confession and the discovery of Vasilieva’s body in Moniatis, investigators are gathering the remaining evidence and witness statements to establish the full circumstances surrounding the killing and reconstruct the movements of the man who has admitted to the crime.

Vasilieva’s son has also arrived in Cyprus and is expected to give a statement to the authorities, helping investigators build a clearer picture of his mother’s life and contacts before she disappeared.

According to information obtained during the investigation, there is currently no indication that the 43-year-old managed to obtain money from the victim while she was alive or took any money following her murder.

Certain withdrawals that had come under investigation appear to have been made by Vasilieva herself beforehand and for an unrelated reason, with no apparent connection to the suspect’s financial demands.

However, the matter is expected to be conclusively clarified once banking confidentiality is lifted, allowing investigators to examine the relevant financial records.

Suspect allegedly used bleach on victim’s body

One particularly disturbing detail to emerge from the investigation is that the suspect allegedly poured bleach over Vasilieva’s body after killing her and before placing it in a shaft on a field.

His apparent intention was to prevent an unpleasant smell from developing, thereby avoiding suspicion and concealing the crime.

Meanwhile, the 43-year-old was involved in an altercation with another detainee at the Limassol Police Headquarters detention facilities on Sunday evening.

The incident was not considered serious. However, he was taken to hospital as a precaution before authorities instructed that he be held in isolation.

Police weighing premeditated murder or manslaughter charges

Police, in consultation with the Law Office, are working to complete the investigation file before deciding whether to bring charges of premeditated murder or manslaughter.

A key issue will be establishing whether the killing was premeditated, which is legally distinct from the intention to cause death and may involve evidence of prior planning.

The suspect’s confession to killing Vasilieva is not, in itself, sufficient to establish premeditation. Investigators and prosecutors must assess the circumstances leading up to and surrounding the crime as a whole.

Premeditated murder carries a mandatory life sentence under Cyprus law. Manslaughter can also carry a life sentence, although this is not mandatory, leaving the court discretion when determining the appropriate punishment.

The final decision on the charges will depend on the evidence gathered and the assessment of the case by the prosecuting authorities.
