Meeting with municipality set after criticism over cycling measures and plastic bollards

Public Works has broken its silence following two weeks of backlash over mobility works in Limassol, signalling openness to changes and announcing a meeting with the municipality.

In a statement issued after receiving a letter from Limassol mayor Yiannis Armeftis, the department said the projects under way, including new cycling infrastructure, form part of a broader plan to create a safer and more sustainable urban transport system.

It added that extensive consultations had taken place in previous years with residents, organised groups, professional bodies and local authorities, with the aim of promoting functional and modern solutions.

However, the department acknowledged that some recent interventions, including the installation of plastic bollards to separate cycle lanes and the introduction of shared-space routes, have triggered reactions and concern.

It said issues relating to aesthetics, day-to-day functionality and public information are being taken seriously.

Following the mayor’s intervention, Public Works said it is ready to work closely with Limassol municipality and its council to ensure that final solutions meet both safety and mobility needs and public expectations regarding the city’s image.

At the same time, it announced that, on the minister’s instructions, a meeting will be held in the coming days, alongside the launch of a targeted information campaign to present the benefits and key features of the project.
