Limassol Municipality crews removed bollards from Theklas Lyssioti Street on Monday morning, after the fixtures were placed outside school premises and triggered strong local reaction.
The municipality said the intervention was intended to restore safer and more practical access for the drop-off and pick-up of pupils, as the dispute continues between the local authority and state services over works being carried out under the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan.
In a statement, the municipality said the move followed a letter sent to the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works, setting out 11 points and requesting specific changes to works implemented by the Public Works Department.
According to the municipality, the decision to remove the bollards was taken because their installation continued on Monday despite the objections already raised.
Limassol Municipality stressed that it supports the implementation of the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan, but said the project must be carried out in a way that is functional and safe, without measures that create additional problems in citizens’ everyday lives.
