Cyprus' Council of Ministers has approved plans for the introduction of “Easter Villages” from 2027 as part of efforts to enrich the island's tourism offering and boost visitor numbers in rural and mountainous areas.

According to the Deputy Ministry of Tourism, the 2027 Easter Experiences and Activities Incentive Scheme received Cabinet approval last Wednesday following a proposal by the ministry.

The scheme is aimed at municipalities and communities located along the Heartland of Legends route, including rural, mountainous and remote areas.

Under the programme, 10 municipalities or communities will be selected to organise a comprehensive series of activities running from Holy Thursday through to Thomas Sunday.

Traditional Easter experiences

Planned events will include:

  • Preparation of traditional Easter foods and handicrafts
  • Decoration of the Epitaphios (Holy Friday bier)
  • Traditional games
  • Guided tours led by licensed tour guides
  • Lessons in Cypriot traditional dances
  • Introductions to Byzantine music and iconography
  • Nature-based activities

Participating communities will also have the option of setting up stalls showcasing and selling local products.

Supporting rural tourism

Deputy Tourism Minister Costas Koumis said the initiative aims to strengthen Cyprus' tourism product during the Easter period while attracting more visitors to the countryside and supporting local communities.

The programme also seeks to preserve and promote Cyprus' cultural identity through authentic Easter traditions and experiences.

Further details on participation criteria and the application process will be announced by the Deputy Ministry of Tourism at a later stage.
