Cyprus Working Life Averages 39.5 Years, Eurostat Says

Men in Cyprus can expect to work 42.1 years and women 36.7 years, both well above the EU average, according to new Eurostat figures.

The expected duration of working life for people aged 15 and over in Cyprus stood at 39.5 years in 2025, according to data published on Thursday by Eurostat. More specifically, the expected duration of working life in Cyprus was 42.1 years for men and 36.7 years for women. At EU level, people aged 15 and over are expected to work an average of 37.5 years, up from 37.2 years in 2024. According to Eurostat, the expected duration of working life across the EU has risen by 2.3 years since 2016, from 35.2 to 37.5 years.

Among member states, seven countries recorded an average expected working life of 40 years or more. The longest was recorded in the Netherlands, at 44 years, followed by Sweden with 43.4 years, Denmark with 42.6, Estonia with 41.5, Ireland with 40.7, Germany with 40.2 and Finland with 40.1. By contrast, the shortest durations were recorded in Romania, at 32.7 years, Italy, at 33, and Bulgaria, at 34.6. According to Eurostat, men across the EU are expected to work an average of 39.5 years in 2025, more than women, for whom the corresponding average was 35.4 years.

For men, the longest expected working life was recorded in the Netherlands, at 45.9 years, followed by Sweden and Denmark, both at 44.5 years, and Ireland at 43.4. The shortest expected working life for men was recorded in Bulgaria, at 35.9 years, Romania at 36, and Croatia at 36.3. For women, the longest durations were recorded in Sweden, at 42.3 years, the Netherlands at 41.9, and Estonia at 41.8. The shortest durations for women were recorded in Italy, at 28.4 years, Romania at 29.1, and Greece at 31.8.
