Two sheep and goat units, in Pentakomo in Limassol and Avgorou in the free province of Famagusta, are under investigation by the Veterinary Services to establish whether they represent new cases of foot-and-mouth disease. The picture will become clear once laboratory tests are complete.
"These are two cases under investigation. They have not yet been classified as confirmed cases. They are being assessed, and official announcements will follow when there is something to announce," Dimitris Epaminondas, a member of the epidemiological team and President of the Pancyprian Veterinary Association, told Politis.
If the two units are confirmed as cases, the total number of infected units will rise to 123. It is worth noting that the last case was recorded on 10 June. Such a development would also mark the presence of foot-and-mouth disease in eastern Limassol and the free province of Famagusta for the first time.
Since 20 February 2026, when the first case was identified, infected sheep and goats have reached 52,632, representing 11.5% of the total population, with 24,483 pigs (7.8%) and 3,018 cattle (3.5%) also affected.
In total, 123 units have been infected, while compensation already approved or paid to affected farmers for loss of livestock, milk and animal feed has reached €19.47 million.
