Further strengthening strategic cooperation between Cyprus and China was discussed by President of the Republic Nikos Christodoulides and Chinese Vice President Han Zheng during their meeting in New York.
President Christodoulides said he plans to visit China in early 2027, with the aim of strengthening bilateral relations and discussing international developments.
According to a statement by the Presidency, the President congratulated the Chinese Vice President on China’s National Day, noting that Cyprus celebrates its National Day on the same date, October 1. He added that, before travelling to New York, he had the honour of attending the event hosted by the Chinese Ambassador in Nicosia.
Christodoulides also noted that this year marks 55 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
“I also look forward to my visit to China in early 2027, to further strengthen our bilateral relations and to discuss international developments,” he said.
Referring to international cooperation, the President stressed that Cyprus and China are staunch supporters of multilateralism and must continue working together to implement international law and the Charter of the United Nations in a difficult and challenging international environment.
The President of the Republic also thanked China for its principled position on the Cyprus problem and for its stance at the UN Security Council.
“We greatly appreciate your position within the Security Council. At the same time, I reiterate our clear position on the One-China Policy,” he said.
For his part, the Chinese Vice President said, through an interpreter, that the two countries have different systems, traditions and cultures, but that respect, equality and cooperation had always existed between them, which, he said, constituted a model of cooperation in the world.
Han Zheng said that this year marks 55 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Cyprus, while also marking the fifth anniversary of the China–Cyprus Strategic Partnership.
He said that in recent years, under the strategic guidance of President Xi Jinping and Nikos Christodoulides, bilateral relations had maintained steady growth, with progress in practical cooperation and relations between the two peoples.
“China is ready to work with Cyprus to deepen relations for mutual benefit, intensify multilateral cooperation, build an even more fruitful strategic partnership and deliver even greater benefits to the two peoples,” he said.
