The redeveloped Old GSP is entering a new phase following the completion of a tender for the commercial use of five units at the multifunctional park in central Nicosia. Although several major business groups and companies initially expressed interest, only one bid was submitted.
The offer came from CATERCOM LTD PHC, a member of PHC Franchised Restaurants Public Ltd, and was awarded by the Nicosia Municipal Council on 30 July. The company is expected to manage and develop all five commercial units, some of which may be operated by other businesses through subcontracting arrangements.
Businesses expected to operate throughout the day
The units are expected to accommodate cafés, restaurants, bars and a retail shop, bringing regular commercial activity to a site currently used mainly for organised events.
Nicosia Municipality wants the Old GSP to attract visitors from the morning until late at night, strengthening its everyday use and its connection with the capital’s commercial and administrative centre.
Provided no appeals are filed before the Tenders Review Authority, the contract is expected to be signed in the coming period. Interior works are scheduled to begin in September.
The premises will be handed over as cold shells, meaning they will be delivered in a basic structural condition without completed interiors. Each operator will therefore be able to design and equip its unit according to its intended use, operational requirements and corporate identity.
The businesses are expected to begin operating approximately four to six months after the contract is signed.
Citizen Service Centre planned for 2027
According to information obtained by Politis, the municipality also aims to reopen a Citizen Service Centre at the Old GSP during 2027, following the closure of the previous centre on Makariou Avenue.
Restoring the service has been a longstanding request from people who live or work in central Nicosia. A construction tender is expected to be launched in the coming period, most likely in September because of the summer holidays.
Work is progressing rapidly and, under the current timetable, the new centre is expected to open next year at the amphitheatre square.
Residents also call for a pharmacy
Residents of the walled city have also raised the absence of a pharmacy in the area. Several told Politis that the possibility of opening one at the Old GSP should be considered, arguing that it could serve local workers, tourists and permanent residents.
