Police have stepped up road checks ahead of the Assumption holiday weekend, when increased traffic is expected across Cyprus.
Officers will monitor motorways and other parts of the road network, particularly routes leading to mountain and coastal areas, Police Headquarters Communications Branch Officer Michalis Michael told CNA.
Police action plan
Michael said police had prepared an action plan covering the entire holiday period, with officers deployed to conduct traffic checks and provide assistance where required.
He said the increased police presence was intended to support road safety and help manage heavier traffic, particularly on motorways and roads serving popular holiday destinations.
Checks target serious offences
Traffic checks aimed at preventing serious and fatal collisions are conducted daily and will not be limited to the Assumption holiday period, Michael said.
Police are also participating in a Europe-wide ROADPOL campaign targeting speeding. The operation began on 3 August and will conclude on Sunday, 9 August.
However, Michael stressed that the intensified checks would cover all serious traffic offences, including:
- Speeding
- Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs
- Failure to wear a seat belt or protective helmet
- Using a mobile phone while driving
Police have also increased checks and public information efforts concerning personal mobility devices, including electric scooters.
Drivers urged to remain alert
Michael said particular care would be required on motorways and roads leading to mountain and coastal areas because of the expected increase in traffic.
“Let us all be extremely careful on the roads, drive responsibly, respect other road users and remember that every choice we make on the road can affect human lives,” he said.
