High temperatures are expected to persist across Cyprus until at least Wednesday, with inland areas reaching around 40°C and elevated humidity increasing discomfort along the coast.
Meteorological Officer Matthaios Papadakis said the current conditions could continue or intensify over the coming days, although temperatures are generally expected to remain at similar levels.
Heat and humidity affect coastal areas
Papadakis said conditions would be particularly difficult in some areas because of the combination of high temperatures and humidity.
“Conditions along the coast are difficult,” he said, explaining that although temperatures in Nicosia could remain close to 40°C, high humidity would also create considerable discomfort in coastal areas.
A yellow heat warning was issued for Saturday, with temperatures forecast to reach 40°C in parts of the interior.
Asked whether the heatwave could peak or produce new temperature records, Papadakis said temperatures were expected to remain broadly unchanged over the coming days. Saturday’s maximum was forecast at between 39°C and 40°C.
“It is a similar pattern to what we experienced at the beginning of August,” he said, adding that temperatures were slightly above the seasonal average.
Mainly clear weather through Wednesday
Seasonal low pressure is affecting the region, with mainly clear conditions forecast throughout the period.
On Saturday afternoon, increased cloud cover over the mountains could produce isolated rain. Winds will be mainly south-westerly to north-westerly, light to moderate at force 3 to 4, becoming moderate to strong at force 4 to 5 in some areas. The sea will be slight to moderate.
Saturday night will remain mainly clear, although increased low cloud is expected in some areas. Mist or fog could form during the early morning, mainly in the southeast and inland.
Temperatures will fall to around 24°C inland and along the coast, and to about 21°C in the higher mountains.
Sunday temperatures to reach 39°C inland
Sunday will be generally clear, with winds blowing mainly from the southwest to northwest at force 3 to 4, gradually strengthening locally to force 4 to 5. The sea will be generally slight.
Temperatures are expected to reach:
- 39°C inland
- 35°C along the southern and eastern coasts
- 32°C along the western and northern coasts
- 29°C in the higher mountains
Mainly clear weather will continue on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, although temporary afternoon cloud is expected, particularly over the mountains. Isolated rain cannot be ruled out in mountainous areas on Tuesday.
Temperatures are not expected to change significantly during the three-day period and will remain slightly above seasonal averages.
