EDEK has approved all four candidacies for its leadership election, clearing the way for the vote to take place on 5 September 2026.
The decision was taken by the party’s acting president and deputy president, Morfakis Solomonides, following an intervention by the Congress Credentials Committee.
Decision follows statutory review
The committee had asked EDEK’s Political Bureau to examine and approve the candidacies in accordance with Article 38 of the party statute.
In a written statement, Solomonides said he had taken the decision “with the sole consideration being the good of EDEK” and with the aim of ensuring a smooth path towards the internal election.
“I fully and consciously assume the political decision to approve the candidacies of all four comrades,” he said, adding that he was setting in motion the procedures required for the election on 5 September.
Appeal for a restrained campaign
Solomonides acknowledged the political weight of the decision but said he would not allow the party to become “hostage to deliberately provoked tension”.
He called on the candidates and party officials to maintain a restrained tone throughout the campaign so that the election could take place through constructive political dialogue.
“My wish, and I will work hard towards it, is for us to reach the election in a climate of dialogue, not insults and unfounded claims,” he said.
Solomonides also urged those involved to avoid public attacks and unsubstantiated accusations, warning that they would otherwise be accountable to EDEK’s members, who want unity and expect to hear policies and proposals.
“EDEK is a democratic party, and in a democracy there are no dead ends,” he said. “Democracy will speak on 5 September.”
