Cyprus and India have elevated their relationship to a Strategic Partnership, with the government highlighting benefits in areas including security, defence, investment, technology and trade.

The Presidency has described the relationship between Cyprus and India as a historic one that is now acquiring strategic depth and delivering tangible benefits for Cyprus.

In a post on X, the Presidency said Cyprus is building a relationship with one of the world's largest economies and a strategic partner with an increasingly influential international presence.

According to the statement, the partnership creates "specific political, economic and geostrategic prospects for our country".

"The upgrade of Cyprus-India relations to a Strategic Partnership strengthens political coordination between the two countries and expands cooperation in critical sectors such as security, defence, counter-terrorism, technology, innovation, shipping, education and connectivity," the Presidency said.

It added that the move also opens new opportunities for investment and for Cypriot companies seeking access to the Indian market.

The Presidency noted that Cyprus is already among the top 10 investor countries in India, with Cypriot investments having doubled over the past decade.

According to the statement, Cyprus is also emerging as an important gateway between India and Europe, offering Indian businesses access to the European Union's single market of more than 450 million consumers.

The Presidency further said that strengthening EU-India strategic relations, combined with the prospects of the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC), enhances Cyprus' position on the evolving trade and connectivity route linking India, the Middle East and Europe.

"A historic relationship that is now acquiring strategic depth and translating into tangible results for Cyprus," the Presidency concluded.
