A military explosive discovered in Agia Anna following Wednesday's wildfire has been successfully neutralised by National Guard bomb disposal experts, while authorities continue to deal with a second munition found in the area.
According to Defence Ministry spokesman Sophianos Philippides, two military munitions were identified during operations linked to the forest fire that broke out on Wednesday.
The first device, located within the Kalo Chorio firing range, was identified as an 81mm illumination mortar round.
Area secured overnight
A National Guard explosives disposal team was dispatched to the scene, where the area was cordoned off and secured.
The site remained under guard throughout the night by both the Police and the National Guard.
Philippides said the mortar round was successfully neutralised at 9:30am on Thursday.
Second munition remains
The Defence Ministry spokesman also confirmed reports published by Phileleftheros regarding the discovery of a second military munition in the area.
No further details about the second device have been released.
Fire burned six hectares
The wildfire broke out at around 3pm on Wednesday within the bed of the Tremithos River, inside the administrative boundaries of Agia Anna.
Firefighters brought the blaze fully under control by 5:30pm.
The fire burned approximately six hectares of land covered with reeds, wild vegetation and crop stubble.
