The state will provide support to people affected by the problems and damage caused by the severe weather that hit Cyprus on Saturday, President Nikos Christodoulides said on Sunday.
Speaking to reporters after a memorial service for heroes Ionas Nicolaou and Kyriakos Kolokasis in Yeri, the president was asked about the consequences of the previous day’s severe weather.
Christodoulides expressed his sorrow over the “tragic loss of one of our compatriots” before stressing that all relevant state services were on alert.
“All the competent services are on alert from today to see how we can help address the challenges, problems and damage” caused by Saturday’s severe weather, he said.
“The state will stand by all those of our compatriots who need it,” the president added.
He also noted that the competent authorities had issued warnings about the expected weather conditions well in advance.
“From very early on, from the previous days, the competent authorities had been informing [people] about this situation,” he said.
