A future partnership could see Limassol exchange expertise with a Portuguese coastal city on sustainable development and urban policy. The possibility was discussed on Wednesday by Mayor Yiannis Armeftis and Portugal’s new Ambassador to Cyprus, Carmen Silvestre.
Shared priorities for greener cities
According to Limassol Municipality, the courtesy meeting was also attended by Portugal’s Deputy Head of Mission Jonas Sumares, Honorary Consul of Portugal in Cyprus Myron Nicolatos, Limassol Deputy Mayor Demos Katsis and municipal officials.
Discussions covered sustainable urban development, climate neutrality, public space, urban greenery and sustainable mobility.
Armeftis outlined the city’s main planning priorities, placing particular emphasis on improving the quality of public spaces and advancing Limassol’s objectives under the European Mission for Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities.
Cultural diplomacy and city exchanges
The two sides also discussed using cultural diplomacy to strengthen relations and cooperation between Cyprus and Portugal at the municipal level through joint cultural initiatives and exchanges.
Particular attention was given to exchanging experience and expertise with Portuguese cities. They also explored cooperation with a Portuguese city that shares Limassol’s characteristics, particularly its coastal and urban identity.
