Makarios Drousiotis and Kyriaki Kyriakou, known as “Sandy”, are due to appear before the Nicosia District Court today for proceedings relating to their referral for trial before the Criminal Court.
The appearance marks the first court hearing in a case that has attracted significant public attention since March, following the publication of a controversial online post by the author and former presidential adviser.
101 charges filed
The case was registered in July by officers from Police Headquarters' Criminal Investigation Department following instructions from the Legal Service.
Both defendants were subsequently served with indictments containing a total of 101 charges, including:
- Forgery.
- Circulation of forged documents.
- Publication of false information.
- Harassment.
The most serious charges relate to the alleged creation and circulation of forged documents, offences that carry prison sentences of up to seven years upon conviction.
Referral to the Criminal Court
Today's proceedings are expected to focus on the formal referral of the case to the Criminal Court for trial.
The charges stem from an online post published by Drousiotis on 30 March, which contained allegations relating to a wide range of issues, including claims concerning a judge, organised criminal activity, the black surveillance van case, the Legal Service and other high-profile public controversies.
A central figure in the publication was Kyriaki Kyriakou, whom Drousiotis referred to as “Sandy”, the name by which the case subsequently became known.
Police investigation
The police investigation included statements from all parties involved, including Drousiotis and Kyriakou, as well as forensic examinations of electronic devices.
In June, police held a press conference during which senior officers said the content of the publication was based on fabricated messages.
According to police, that conclusion was supported by statements from Kyriakou herself, who reportedly explained how the messages had been created and identified the application allegedly used to generate them.
Focus shifts to defence strategy
With court proceedings now beginning, attention is turning to the legal strategies of the two defendants.
Kyriakou is expected to indicate whether she intends to admit any of the offences she faces, following reports that she acknowledged creating the messages at the centre of the investigation.
Drousiotis, meanwhile, is expected to contest the charges, based on positions he has publicly expressed since the case emerged.
The matter is expected to proceed to the Criminal Court following today's appearance.
