Eight affected communities in the Mitsero area have warned they will escalate their protests if the process to install an asphalt plant in Mitsero continues, after holding a peaceful demonstration on Thursday at the proposed site of the plant.
In a statement issued by the Mitsero Community Council on behalf of the eight communities, they said there is strong concern over the planned installation of the plant, at a time when, they argue, no solutions have been provided for the area's existing environmental problems, despite government commitments and related legal obligations.
The communities said the "accumulated nuisances" in the area have been confirmed, as they note, even by the state's own experts, arguing there is no room for yet another polluting or disruptive project.
They also expressed concern that, as they put it, no substantive progress has been made in addressing the area's environmental issues, even as the process to install the asphalt plant moves forward.
According to the statement, the communities are continuing their legal battle and their contacts with the state, while also considering a series of mobilisations and an escalation of their protests.
The statement is signed by the Community Councils of Agios Ioannis, Agrokipia, Arediou, Kato Moni, Malounta, Menoiko, Mitsero and Orounta, with the support of the "Communities in Action" Initiative Group.
