Two more bodies have been found during continuing searches around the wreck of the Filo Jet off Kyrenia, according to statements by Ünal Üstel, head of the Turkish Cypriot administration.
The discovery was made as crews continue searching the seabed for passengers who remain missing following the shipwreck nearly a month ago.
Bodies found at depth of 570 metres
According to Kıbrıs Postası, the bodies were found approximately one kilometre from the wreck and at a depth of 570 metres, during searches of the seabed surrounding the site of the sunken vessel.
The latest discovery forms part of continuing efforts to locate those who remain unaccounted for following the sinking.
DNA examination begins
Üstel said the DNA examination process has already begun to determine whether the bodies belong to passengers who remain missing and to establish their identities.
According to Üstel, the families of the missing passengers will be informed once the examinations have been completed and the results are available.
Search operation to continue
Searches of the seabed around the wreck remain under way, with Üstel saying efforts will continue until the missing passengers are found.
“As a state, we will continue the searches until we reach our missing passengers,” he said, while also expressing condolences to the families of the victims.
The development comes nearly a month after the deadly Filo Jet shipwreck off Kyrenia, with searches for the missing continuing both at the surface and at significant depths.
