Cyprus' Independent Authority Against Corruption has received a total of 911 complaints, of which 645 have already been examined, its chairman, Haris Poyiadjis, said on Tuesday.
Speaking at the Cyprus Forum in Nicosia during a discussion on the rule of law beyond institutional independence, Poyiadjis said 911 complaints had been submitted by 31 August 2026. Reviews had been completed in 645 cases, representing 71% of the total.
He said the complaints had come from both institutions and members of the public, adding that the Authority had identified a lack of awareness regarding corruption-related issues.
On granting investigative powers to the Authority, Poyiadjis said relevant proposals from the Justice Ministry had recently been received and discussions were expected to begin during October 2026.
Regarding prosecutorial powers, he said that "there is reluctance on the part of the authorities to proceed at this stage", adding that constitutional amendments would be required for such powers to be granted.
Poyiadjis also said the Authority had developed and begun gradually implementing an action plan comprising 11 measures.
Referring to efforts to safeguard the integrity of individuals holding senior executive positions, he said the Authority aims, within about a year, to provide every person assuming office with a handbook containing all legislation related to corruption.
The handbook will be accompanied by guidance on the risks arising from failure to comply with the relevant legislation.
