The hearing in the case concerning alleged torture at a premises in Pyla has been set for 10 November before the Larnaca Permanent Assize Court. The two defendants, aged 48 and 27, appeared in court today.
At a previous hearing, both defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges they face. The 27-year-old’s objection to remaining in custody will be examined on 12 October.
The 48-year-old had filed an application seeking to have the case dismissed on the grounds of abuse of process. He argued that two separate cases had been filed against him—one concerning the incidents outside the Larnaca CID and the other concerning the torture at a premises in Pyla—and that, in his view, they should have been included in a single indictment.
The Larnaca Permanent Assize Court dismissed the application as premature, ruling that the available facts could not, on their own, support his claim of abuse of process.
Police still searching for other accomplices
The 48-year-old faces charges concerning the subjection of a person to torture, deprivation of a person’s liberty with the intent of placing someone at risk of grievous harm, causing grievous bodily harm, assaults causing actual bodily harm, and demanding property with threats. The 27-year-old faces charges of deprivation of a person’s liberty, subjection of a person to torture, and assault.
Another person is still being sought in connection with the case; a court arrest warrant has been issued against them. Other alleged accomplices of the two defendants are also being sought, as the videos show other perpetrators who have not yet been identified.
There are six victims: three Cypriots, one of whom is outside Cyprus; an Indian national who is also outside Cyprus; and an Arab national who is in Cyprus. The sixth victim appears to be a European citizen, and efforts are being made to identify them.
Larnaca CID is continuing its investigations.
