A British man's body destined for repatriation abroad was found to be missing when funeral directors arrived to collect it.

Police are investigating the disappearance of a body from the morgue of Nicosia General Hospital after a British national's remains could not be located during a scheduled collection.

According to the report, the deceased man died in Paphos about a month ago and his body had been transferred to the Nicosia morgue because the Paphos morgue remains closed.

Discovery during collection

The disappearance came to light when staff from a funeral home arrived at the morgue to collect the body for transportation overseas.

During the handover process, it was discovered that the remains were no longer in the facility. Police were subsequently notified and launched an investigation to determine what happened.

Various possibilities being examined

Citing information first reported by Phileleftheros, the report says investigators are examining whether another funeral home may have been involved in collecting the body and whether such a transfer may not have been properly recorded.

Authorities are continuing efforts to trace the missing remains and establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
