Cyprus’ Department of Meteorology has issued a new yellow weather warning for isolated strong thunderstorms on Thursday, October 29, as unsettled conditions are expected to affect the island.
The warning will be in force from 9am until 5pm, with isolated strong thunderstorms initially expected to affect the western half of the island before gradually spreading to other areas.
Rainfall intensity is forecast to reach between 35 and 55 millimetres per hour, while hail is also possible.
Wind gusts could temporarily reach 7 to 8 Beaufort during thunderstorms, the department warned.
Rain and thunderstorms expected overnight
A low-pressure system centred over the southern Aegean is moving south-eastwards and affecting the region, according to the latest forecast.
Tonight, the weather will be mainly cloudy, with local showers and isolated thunderstorms expected. Most of the rainfall is forecast to affect coastal areas, although hail is possible during thunderstorms.
Winds will initially be mainly south-easterly to south-westerly, light to moderate at 3 to 4 Beaufort. They may temporarily strengthen to moderate or strong at 4 to 5 Beaufort in some coastal areas.
During thunderstorms, winds may change direction and strengthen, with gusts reaching 7 to 8 Beaufort. The sea will generally remain slightly rough.
Minimum temperatures are expected to fall to around 15C inland, 16C on the coast and 8C in the highest mountainous areas.
Thunderstorms to continue on Thursday
Thursday will remain mainly cloudy, with local showers and isolated thunderstorms expected across the island. Hail is possible during thunderstorms.
Winds will initially be mainly south-easterly to south-westerly, light to moderate at 3 to 4 Beaufort, before gradually becoming southerly to south-westerly and moderate to strong at 4 to 5 Beaufort. Later in the day, they will turn south-westerly to westerly.
Gusts during thunderstorms could again reach 7 to 8 Beaufort, while the sea will be slightly rough initially and locally slightly rough to rough later.
Maximum temperatures are expected to reach around 23C inland, 22C on the coast and 12C in the highest mountainous areas.
Conditions to improve gradually overnight
On Thursday night, the weather is expected to gradually become partly cloudy. However, isolated showers or thunderstorms cannot be ruled out, particularly in coastal areas.
Winds will be mainly westerly to north-westerly, light to moderate at 3 to 4 Beaufort, occasionally reaching moderate strength locally. The sea will be up to slightly rough.
Isolated showers possible over the weekend
On Friday and throughout the weekend, periods of increased local cloud are expected, which may produce isolated showers, particularly in mountainous areas.
Temperatures are forecast to rise slightly by Sunday, although they will remain close to or slightly below the seasonal average.
