Tax Commissioner Sotiris Markides is urging taxpayers to submit their 2025 income tax returns as soon as possible and not wait until the filing deadline of 31 October 2026.
Speaking to Politis, Markides said that as of 28 July, around 65,500 individuals had processed their 2025 income tax return, of whom approximately 53,700 had completed final submission.
A further 11,800 returns remain in temporary status and have not yet been formally submitted.
The number of final submissions so far is equivalent to about 19% of the total returns processed for the 2024 tax year by last year's filing deadline.
For the 2024 tax year, 342,600 returns were processed, with 337,400 submitted successfully before the deadline.
More returns expected this year
Markides said the number of returns filed this year is expected to be slightly higher due to the continued expansion of the tax base.
Employees, pensioners and self-employed individuals with gross annual income exceeding €19,500 during 2025 are required to submit an income tax return.
Deadline and penalty
The commissioner reminded taxpayers that the deadline for filing a 2025 income tax return for individuals not required to prepare audited accounts is 31 October 2026.
Returns submitted after that date will incur a €150 financial penalty.
“Our appeal is for taxpayers to submit their return as soon as possible and not wait until the deadline, paying particular attention to the final submission of the return, since declarations that remain in ‘Temporary Save’ status are not considered submitted and remain pending,” Markides said.
Automated features retained
The 2025 tax return continues to include a number of automated functions designed to simplify the process for taxpayers.
For pensioners, entering identification details, including social insurance number, date of birth and gender, automatically populates pension income and deductions, including income tax and Gesy contributions, based on information from the Treasury and Social Insurance Services.
For self-employed individuals, the same identification details allow the system to automatically retrieve and populate Social Insurance and Gesy contributions.
In addition, employer details and information from insurance companies used in previous returns will appear automatically as pre-filled data.
The system will also automatically calculate final amounts under the Tax Calculation section, including:
- Income tax
- Gesy contributions
- Special Defence Contribution
