The Education Ministry says each school is being assessed separately to ensure the project is completed quickly, without compromising safety.

The Ministry of Education, Sport and Youth has responded to reports on the installation of air-conditioning units in schools, saying the project is proceeding as planned and through the required procedures.

In a statement, the ministry said the project is particularly complex because electrical installations in school buildings had not been upgraded for decades. It noted that installing air-conditioning units is not limited to placing the units themselves, but requires wider interventions and reinforcement of electrical infrastructure to ensure safe operation. The ministry said each school is being assessed separately at a technical level, with the aim of speeding up implementation while safeguarding pupils, teachers and school facilities.

Any procedural or technical issues that arise are being handled in cooperation with school boards, the Treasury and the competent authorities, it added. The ministry also underlined that the government has already taken a political decision to gradually install air-conditioning in schools and that the necessary funds have been secured.

According to the ministry, air-conditioning units have already been installed and are operating in all kindergartens and lyceums across Cyprus, as well as in a number of gymnasiums and primary schools.

The next phase of the plan provides for full coverage of gymnasiums and the continuation of installations in primary schools, with priority given to pupils’ needs and the safety of school buildings.
