Cyprus is set to endure several more days of intense heat, with temperatures expected to reach 40C inland and remain above seasonal averages until at least Saturday.
The Department of Meteorology has issued a yellow warning for extreme maximum temperatures, which will be in effect from 2pm to 4.30pm on Wednesday.
Temperatures to hit 40C inland
The weather will remain mainly clear under the influence of seasonal low pressure affecting the region.
Wednesday's temperatures are expected to reach:
- 40C inland
- 36C along most coastal areas
- 33C on the west and southwest coast
- 29C in the higher mountains
Winds will initially be light northeasterly to southeasterly before turning southwesterly to northwesterly later in the day, becoming locally strong along southern coastal areas.
Warm nights continue
Overnight conditions will remain mostly clear, with temperatures dropping to:
- 25C inland
- 25C on eastern and southeastern coasts
- 24C on other coastal areas
- 20C in the higher mountains
Heat to persist through Saturday
The Meteorology Department said conditions on Thursday, Friday and Saturday are expected to remain mainly clear, with no significant change in temperatures.
The mercury is forecast to stay above average climatic values, prolonging the heatwave conditions across the island.
