A wildfire that broke out near Choletria in the Paphos district has been brought under control after threatening two isolated homes.
The fire burned crops, stubble and wild vegetation in the Souskiou area, between Asprokremmos and Choletria, while firefighting crews continued operations to prevent any possible flare-ups.
Fire brought under control
President of the Choletria Community Council and the Diarizos cluster of communities Haris Pazaros told Politis that the fire had been contained and that crews were working towards its complete extinguishment.
He said the blaze had burned low vegetation in an area containing several grazing grounds.
According to Pazaros, the winds were not particularly strong, helping firefighters restrict the spread of the flames.
Two homes protected
Pazaros said two isolated homes were saved following the timely intervention of the firefighting services.
Crews remained in the area as operations continued towards the complete extinguishment of the fire.
In a later update, Fire Service spokesperson Andreas Kettis said the blaze between Nikokleia and Choletria had been brought under control and contained.
The fire burned around two hectares of crops, stubble and wild vegetation.
Ground and air response
The operation involved five staffed Fire Service engines, five vehicles from the Department of Forests and a Portable Firefighting Unit from the Game and Fauna Service.
A contracted bulldozer was also deployed, while four firefighting aircraft carried out water drops over the affected area.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
