Attorney-General Discusses Justice Reform, Corruption and Cyprus Issue

The wide-ranging interview examines the rule of law, institutional reform and Cyprus’ legal role within the European Union.

 

Attorney-General of the Republic George L. Savvides has outlined his views on the justice system, anti-corruption efforts, the Cyprus issue and the country’s position within the European and international legal order.

Speaking in an extensive interview for the ERA Talks podcast series, Savvides addressed reforms under way in the justice sector, the role of the Law Office of the Republic and the legal challenges facing Cyprus at European and international level.

Justice reform and institutional responsibilities

The discussion examined the role of the Law Office within a modern state governed by the rule of law, as well as the institutional changes intended to strengthen the effectiveness and independence of the justice system.

Particular attention was given to the proposed separation of the responsibilities of the Attorney-General and the Deputy Attorney-General, a reform regarded as central to the further modernisation of the justice system.

Corruption and the rule of law

Savvides also discussed the role of the Law Office in combating corruption and supporting the proper functioning of state institutions.

The interview explored the broader legal framework governing institutional accountability and the protection of the rule of law in Cyprus.

European court rulings and the Cyprus issue

The Attorney-General referred to judgments of the European Court of Human Rights concerning Cyprus and the challenges arising from the country’s participation in the European and international legal system.

He also addressed the importance of international law and the European legal order for the Cyprus issue, highlighting their continuing relevance to the Republic’s legal and diplomatic positions.

Cyprus’ EU Council Presidency

The discussion further covered the contribution expected from the Law Office during Cyprus’ Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

Savvides outlined the institution’s role in supporting the Republic’s legal work and responsibilities during the Presidency, particularly in relation to European decision-making and the application of EU law.
