Disy expects the National Council to be convened before UN envoy María Ángela Holguín's next visit to Cyprus in October, so that the President can give a full briefing on the latest developments on the Cyprus problem and the next steps. In a statement on Sunday, the party noted Holguín's announcement that the UN has completed its exercise on the convergences, which will be available to the parties when negotiations begin, as well as her commitment to continue working to create the conditions for talks to resume. "We believe that in the meantime the National Council will also be convened, for a full briefing by the President of the Republic on the latest developments on the Cyprus problem and the next steps," the statement said.
Disy said it supports the Greek Cypriot side's efforts to resume substantive negotiations from the point where they were interrupted, preserving the negotiating acquis and the convergences. Its firm goal, the party said, remains a solution to the Cyprus problem in line with the relevant UN Security Council resolutions and European values and principles, "to end the occupation and reunify our homeland, without anachronistic guarantees and occupation troops".
