A controversial FIFA decision to rescind a red card issued to United States forward Folarin Balogun has ignited fierce debate ahead of the US team’s World Cup round-of-16 clash against Belgium.
Balogun had been set to miss the knockout match after being sent off for stamping on Bosnian defender Tarik Muharemovic during the United States’ 2-0 victory in the previous round. However, FIFA reversed the suspension following a personal phone call between President Donald Trump and FIFA president Gianni Infantino.
Trump celebrated the outcome on his Truth Social platform, writing: “Thank you to FIFA for doing what was right, and reversing a great injustice!”
The move immediately drew criticism from politicians, football officials and supporters, many questioning the independence and integrity of the sport’s governing body.
Belgium’s opposition Socialist Party condemned the decision, arguing that changing rules to satisfy political interests undermines the credibility of both FIFA and the World Cup.
“When money calls the shots, the World Cup loses all credibility,” the party said, accusing FIFA of damaging the image of the tournament and suggesting that rules should apply equally to everyone.
Yvan Verougstraete, a Member of the European Parliament and leader of the Francophone centrist party Les Engagés, also criticised the decision. He said it was remarkable that a red card could suddenly be viewed as unjust once Trump became involved and warned that FIFA should uphold sporting fairness rather than appear to bow to political pressure.
He added that a Belgian victory would now carry even greater significance.
The Royal Belgian Football Association said it was shocked by FIFA’s ruling, describing it as incompatible with tournament regulations. The federation said it is examining all possible responses to the decision.

Trump getting Folarin Balogun unsuspended from the World Cup just shows you that everything he touches is delegitimate crap.
Now, if the US wins the World Cup, it will be questioned. Thanks, Trump. pic.twitter.com/IIPExBqKZW
Belgium manager Rudi Garcia took a measured approach but admitted the move was unprecedented. He said he could not recall a similar intervention during any previous World Cup and stressed that his focus remained on preparing his team for the match rather than worrying about the American line-up.
Garcia also joked about the timing of the announcement, saying he had not realised that 5 July had become “the first of April”, comparing the situation to an April Fools’ prank.
While criticism mounted from officials and politicians, social media users quickly turned the controversy into a viral phenomenon.
Supporters of Trump praised what many dubbed “the Trump card”, celebrating the president’s apparent influence. Others accused FIFA of creating an unfair advantage for the host nation and warned that any future US success in the tournament would be viewed through the lens of the controversy.

Many online commentators targeted Infantino directly, arguing that the decision further undermined FIFA’s claims of political neutrality. Critics pointed to the FIFA president’s close relationship with Trump and revived previous accusations that football’s governing body has become increasingly politicised.
Posts branding the incident as “the most corrupt FIFA World Cup” and “the biggest scandal in World Cup history” circulated widely across social media platforms.
Some frustrated fans even called for a boycott of the United States-Belgium match.
The dispute has also fuelled a wave of AI-generated memes and jokes online, with users mocking both FIFA and the political intervention that led to Balogun’s reinstatement.
As the two teams prepare to meet, the controversy has become one of the dominant talking points of the tournament, overshadowing the football itself and raising fresh questions about FIFA’s governance and the influence of politics in global sport.
The NYT reports that Trump personally called FIFA President Gianni Infantino and asked him to review Team USA’s Folarin Balogun’s World Cup suspension after his red card.
