Cyprus' Anti-Corruption Authority says it will not comment on an ongoing investigation involving a former MP until its inquiry is completed.

The Anti-Corruption Authority has declined to comment on the details of an ongoing investigation into a former member of parliament, following a front-page report in Politis alleging scrutiny over possible fraud and misappropriation of funds through a non-profit company.

Speaking to the Cyprus News Agency (CNA), Transparency Commissioner Haris Poyiatzis said the Authority does not comment on matters under investigation before the completion of its findings.

Asked about the case, Poyiatzis said the Authority refrains from discussing evidence or information related to ongoing investigations in order to protect the integrity of the process.

He added that any information appearing in the media originates from other sources over which the Authority has no control.

Witnesses reportedly being called

Politis reported that witness interviews have already begun, including parliamentary officials and civil servants from various government ministries.

According to the report, the former MP is expected to be among the last individuals to give evidence.

According to information obtained by Politis, the former parliamentarian is being investigated over possible fraud and misappropriation of funds through a non-profit company that he founded and of which he is the sole shareholder.

The company is said to have received approximately €1.3 million in European and national funding.

According to the same information, the Anti-Corruption Authority reviewed the complaints and evidence submitted to it and concluded that there were sufficient grounds for further investigation to determine whether funds allocated for a specific purpose may have been misused.
