Goals from Enzo Fernández and Lautaro Martínez in the closing minutes sent Argentina past England 2-1 and into a World Cup final against Spain.

Argentina produced another dramatic comeback to defeat England 2-1 and book their place in the World Cup final, keeping alive their hopes of successfully defending the title they won in Qatar.

For much of the second half, England looked set to reach their first World Cup final since 1966. Anthony Gordon's strike in the 55th minute had Thomas Tuchel's side within touching distance of victory before Argentina roared back late on.

The first half was a tense and physical affair, featuring 19 fouls and few clear chances as both sides cancelled each other out.

Argentina threatened early after the break when Julián Álvarez was twice denied by Jordan Pickford, who produced two excellent saves to keep England level.

England then struck with their first meaningful opportunity of the match. Morgan Rogers delivered a low cross from the right and Gordon arrived at the back post to finish from close range, exploiting a lapse in the Argentine defence.

Argentina turn it around

Argentina pushed forward in search of an equaliser and came close through Nicolás González, whose header was brilliantly saved by Pickford.

Moments later, Alexis Mac Allister rattled the post with a header as pressure mounted on the English defence.

The breakthrough finally arrived in the 85th minute when Enzo Fernández unleashed a superb strike from outside the box to level the score at 1-1.

Sensing England's vulnerability, Lionel Scaloni's side continued to attack. After Mac Allister struck the woodwork for a second time in stoppage time, Argentina completed the turnaround in the 92nd minute.

Lionel Messi played a key role in the move before Lautaro Martínez headed home from close range to make it 2-1 and send Argentina into the final.

Spain await

The victory sets up a blockbuster final against Spain in New Jersey on Sunday, with Argentina aiming to become back-to-back world champions.

For England, meanwhile, the wait for a second World Cup title goes on, more than 60 years after their only triumph in 1966.
