An armed former MP has been arrested after allegedly opening fire at a local government office on the outskirts of Bangkok, injuring two people.
The shooting occurred just days after nine people were killed in a school attack in the same province, renewing debate over gun controls in Thailand.
Provincial official and driver injured
Provincial Police Commander Major General Dejrapee Kongdee said the suspect opened fire on a senior provincial official and his driver before being taken into custody.
Both victims were transported to hospital for treatment.
“There are two injured people who have been taken to hospital,” Dejrapee told Reuters.
Schools tighten security after deadly attack
The incident follows Friday’s shooting in Nonthaburi province, where a 14-year-old boy allegedly killed his grandparents before opening fire at his school. Nine people were killed and more than 20 others injured before the teenager reportedly turned the gun on himself.
It was Thailand’s deadliest mass shooting in almost four years.
Students returned to schools across the country on Monday, with some passing through metal detectors and additional security checks.
Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has reiterated his intention to strengthen gun controls following Friday’s attack.
