New Delhi says it is increasing diplomatic engagement with both Moscow and Kyiv as it seeks to help advance efforts to end the war.

India is seeking to play a more active role in efforts to help end the war between Russia and Ukraine, according to Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar.

Speaking at a meeting of the Munich Security Conference in New Delhi, Jaishankar said India's position on the conflict remains clear.

“We want to see this conflict end and we believe that can be achieved through dialogue and diplomacy,” he said.

Growing diplomatic engagement

Jaishankar noted that India has maintained this stance for several years but has become increasingly involved in recent months through discussions with both Russia and Ukraine.

The Indian foreign minister met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Kyiv in early September. Earlier, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi had urged Russian President Vladimir Putin to seek a way out of the conflict during a summit in Kyrgyzstan.

‘Trying to be useful’

Jaishankar said India is “trying to be useful” and has focused initially on issues related to maritime security in the Black Sea.

He added that discussions have expanded to include:

  • grain exports
  • energy exports
  • possible non-aggression arrangements

“The discussions are continuing at present,” he said.

Planned US-led talks

The comments come as Zelenskyy announced that the United States is planning to host trilateral talks involving Russian and Ukrainian representatives later this month.

According to Zelenskyy, the discussions are expected to form part of wider American diplomatic efforts aimed at finding a path toward ending the conflict.
