Authorities are investigating a mass shooting at a homecoming celebration in Georgia that left two people dead and dozens injured.

Two men were killed and 35 others wounded after gunfire erupted during a homecoming celebration in the US state of Georgia, authorities said.

The shooting occurred during a high school homecoming event in Dooly County, drawing hundreds of attendees.

According to Dooly County Sheriff Craig Peavy, the two fatalities, aged 21 and 23, were killed in the town of Vienna, about 216 kilometres south of Atlanta.

Dozens hospitalised

The 35 injured victims range in age from 14 to 51 years old.

Authorities said several people suffered gunshot wounds from rifles, while some remain in critical condition.

The event had been co-organised by an educational institution and attracted a large crowd.

No suspects identified

Investigators said they do not believe there is an ongoing threat to the public.

However, authorities have not yet identified any suspects or persons of interest, and no motive has been announced.

“We do not want to speculate about what caused” the shooting, said Chris Hosey, director of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI).
