Inmate Arrested on Suspicion of Premeditated Murder at Nicosia Central Prisons

A 30-year-old convict is expected in court after the death of an inmate who was brutally assaulted inside the prison facility

Police arrested a 30-year-old Greek Cypriot inmate in the early hours of Monday on the basis of a court warrant in connection with a suspected premeditated murder at Nicosia Central Prisons. The detainee is expected to appear before the Nicosia District Court for a remand hearing.

Death following severe assault

According to information available so far, the victim, an inmate of Arab origin, was found severely injured and bleeding by prison guards on Sunday. He had been violently attacked by fellow prisoners inside the facility.

He was transferred to hospital, where doctors on duty confirmed his death.

Investigation under way

Police have issued three arrest warrants for inmates of the Central Prisons in relation to the case. The Nicosia Criminal Investigation Department (CID) is leading the investigation.
