President Nikos Christodoulides encouraged the newly appointed members of the Cabinet to work tirelessly as they assume their duties, speaking during the swearing-in ceremony held at 9am on Monday at the Presidential Palace.

The new ministers are:

  • Michalis Damianou, Minister of Energy
  • Marinos Moushiouttas, Minister of Labour
  • Constantinos Fytiris, Minister of Justice
  • Neophytos Charalambides, Minister of Health
  • Klea Chatzistefanou Papaellina, Deputy Minister of Social Welfare

In addition, Marios Hartsiotis has been appointed as Commissioner of the Presidency.

“A demanding moment with significant challenges”

Addressing the new Cabinet members, President Christodoulides noted that they are taking over at a particularly demanding time, with major challenges that form part of “the great effort to change our country”. He also reminded them that in a few days the Republic of Cyprus will assume the Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

He urged them to familiarise themselves thoroughly with all matters under their portfolios, to make full use of the ministry staff and technocrats, and to remain attentive to citizens’ needs. He called on them to act on fair and justified requests, serve the public interest within the boundaries of the law, uphold transparency and strictly follow the code of conduct.

Commitment to transparency and difficult decisions

Speaking on behalf of the newly appointed officials, the new Minister of Energy, Michalis Damianou, said they wish to be evaluated based on transparency and respect for the principles of democracy and meritocracy. He stated that they are determined to meet these expectations with integrity and professionalism.

“We are prepared to make difficult decisions for the good of the country, even when these carry political cost,” he said. If you would like, I can extend the article once the remaining section of the Greek text is provided.
