There was an optimistic and happy note sounded by the Guterres personal envoy as she continued her sounding out mission on the island, culminating in a trilateral next Thursday and ultimately conducted in preparation for a possible five party informal meeting on Cyprus next year, with no timeframes rolling as yet.
Following talks with President Christodoulides, Maria Angela Holguin said that the meeting of the two leaders next week was a 'good sign' after a period of inaction and reiterated her encouragement in the positive aftermath of recent discussions with Greek and Turkish Cypriot members of the newly formed bicommunal technical committee on youth, hosted in Amman, Jordan, a few weeks ago.
'I am very happy to return to the island. I had a very productive meeting with Mr.Christodoulides. I think we were inspired by this wonderful meeting with young people in Amman and I believe we can move forward in a positive manner,' she said.
Holguin disclosed that the December 11th trilateral is currently being prepared and expressed the hope that it will turn into a quite substantial and productive affair.
'The leaders in Cyprus haven't been meeting for years, so I think it's a good sign now,' she noted.
Holguin further hopes that if current efforts succeed and leaders are able to move forward, the community must support them so they can continue in that direction.
'I am really optimistic and it remains to be seen how the meeting goes', the Guterres personal envoy concluded.
