AKEL has escalated pressure on the government following the release of the controversial video circulating online, describing the case as one that raises serious political, ethical, and institutional concerns. The party argues that the matter directly exposes the President of the Republic and his close circle, and is calling for immediate actions at the highest level.
AKEL Secretary General Stefanos Stefanou described the video allegedly capturing conversations between foreign businessmen and close associates of the President as a case that raises “serious political, ethical and institutional issues”, which, he said, personally and politically expose the President of the Republic and his entourage.
Stefanou was speaking during a press conference organised by AKEL, held exclusively to address the video that came to light yesterday.
AKEL’s demands
The party called for a series of immediate measures, including:
- The immediate dismissal and removal of the Director of the President’s Office, Charalambos Charalambous, from the Presidential Palace
- The abolition of the fund run by the President’s wife, Philippa Karsera, following the publication of the fund’s donors, and the transfer of its responsibilities to another institution
- A public position by the political parties supporting the government, clarifying whether they distance themselves from such practices
AKEL maintains that the seriousness of the allegations and the questions raised by the video require clear political accountability and transparent answers, warning that failure to act risks further undermining public trust in institutions.
