An application for the lifting of parliamentary immunity of EDEK MP Marinos Sizopoulos was filed today by the Legal Service before the Supreme Constitutional Court.

According to confirmation from the Court, the hearing of the application has been set for 3 March 2026.

Legal Service Moves To Enable Criminal Investigation

The development follows the intention of the Legal Service to proceed with a criminal investigation against Mr Sizopoulos, on the basis of findings issued in September 2025 by the Anti-Corruption Authority.

The lifting of immunity is considered procedurally necessary, as without it the MP cannot be questioned as part of a criminal inquiry.

Findings Of The Anti-Corruption Authority

In a report submitted on 11 September 2025 to the Attorney General, George Savvides, the Anti-Corruption Authority recommended that Mr Sizopoulos be investigated for the alleged commission of the following criminal offences, which refer to potential acts of corruption:

  • Fraud
  • Forgery and preparation of a forged document
  • Circulation of a forged document
  • Conspiracy to defraud

The investigation was initiated following complaints submitted by former EDEK MP Giorgos Varnavas. To conduct the inquiry, the Authority appointed two inspection officers: former judge Sotiris Liasis and lawyer Nikolas Constantinou.

Allegations And Response

Giorgos Varnavas alleges that Mr Sizopoulos was involved in securing a “golden” passport through false representations, via a company in which Mr Sizopoulos served as a director and from which he is alleged to have derived financial benefit.

For his part, the former president of EDEK rejects the allegations, stating that he was the victim of deception by a former associate.
