New Apollon–AEL Chaos: Fan Clashes Catch Police Off Guard

They threw firecrackers and molotov cocktails, trashed car windshields, damaged the Apollon clubhouse and set fire to garbage bins.

Dozens of Apollon and AEL football fans clashed just after midnight in central Limassol, with no serious injuries reported, but extensive damage and widespread public disturbance caused by the mass altercation, which was set up ahead of their local football derby on Sunday.

Sources told Politis, that there was significant damage to the Apollon clubhouse  as well as multiple vehicles parked on the adjacent road, mostly having broken windows. Garbage bins were also torched.  It was a body blows face off, as police were caught completely unawares, having no knowledge of the planned confrontation.

Officers are collecting evidence from the scene and taking witness testimony, as they search for the perpetrators.

 

The police report

In a relevant statement, authorities said that five minutes past midnight, a group of individuals threw firecrackers and homemade molotov cocktail  type incendiary objects at the Apollon clubhouse, while clashing with patrons.

At least 11 vehicles have been damaged, mostly broken windshields and windows.

In addition, a passing driver testified that during the altercation, unknown individuals threw a fire extinguisher at his vehicle, causing damage to the rear windshield.
